How to make the easiest dog toy ever

08/02/2017

A complaint we often get from dog owners is that dog toys are too expensive. Yes, dog toys are expensive and you often get what you pay for- a cheap toy often means a “cheapened” experience. However, it doesn’t always need to be that way.

We like the dogs to work for their food and treats using interactive dog toys. So, as part of our Frugal 2017 , we challenged ourselves to come up with the cheapest interactive dog toy we could think of  that the dogs actually enjoyed.

So without further ado, let me introduce to you

The Toilet Paper Dog Toy (insert applause here)

 What you need

Cardboard from a roll of toilet paper

Treats

Method

Dig through the recycling pile to find the cardboard from inside of toilet roll or kitchen roll

Fold one end over

Fill with treats

Fold the other end closed

Give to your dog to play with

Thats it, let the fun times roll

*Always supervise your dog when playing with new toys

Have you ever tried to make your own dog toys? We would love to know what else we can make

That certainly is affordable and easy to make almost any time of day or night when the dogs need some play time. I think I will try a smaller version with the cats.

  2. Rachel says:

Easy peasy! Will have to try this, thank you! Or rather, my dog thanks you! 🙂

I also use paper towel rolls for my cats to play with! Thanks for this very easy tip.

  5. Tenacious Little Terrier says:

I just made that for a puppy that was visiting and he liked that best out of all the toys!

Hmm, I wonder if this toy would work with cats? I’m going to bookmark this page and try it during our next play time.

    Brilliant. Totally inspired!

People whinge about buying dogs toys. Really? What is the matter with people? *eyeroll* I mean really, dogs need three things, Your Love, Your Care and YOUR TOYS!!!!

Don’t be a cat, some fools never take their cats to the vet until they are at death’s door and its too late. *GRRRRR*

Next time Monte’s buddies come over we are doing this

  9. Sherri says:

I love this because I could actually do it. Whether my pets would play with it, I’m not sure (I’ll try). My dog will likely look at me and say, ‘would you just get me a treat already?’

Easy and love it, am going to make one for Layla over the weekend and see how she reacts, thanks

My dog is happy to chew on empty toilet roll tubes and any scrap of paper she can find. She would go crazy for this!

Ha-HA! Love it! And one of my Huskies already loves to play with TP and PT rolls, so filling it with treats? This is perfect. So easy. Love it! Pinning to share, too!

  13. Sadie says:

That is such a cute and clever (and inexpensive) idea! And, because of the cost I can afford to give each dog their own BOL. Love it! Thank you.

We get through so much toilet paper and kitchen roll that we end up making these every couple of days lol

Brilliant, and here I was wishing I had brought one of their interactive toys with us that are, yes, very expensive. I happen to have a cardboard handy so thanks, I’m off to make some treat toys for them.

  15. Carol Bryant says:

I have got to try this. I buy toys and Dex likes to shred the wrapper it came in. This looks like a lot of fun, too. Super idea!

  16. Cathy Armato says:

This is such a clever idea! I’ll have to try it and see how my dogs like it, I bet they’ll enjoy ripping the roll open to get at the treats. This will be like treat packaging they are allowed to rip open! Thanks. I Pinned this to my DIY board.

Super idea – our dogs love toilet paper rolls so this will be like nirvana to them!!

  19. Bryn Nowell says:

Clever! This is great for snowy days when everyone is at home. We’ve also put a plastic water bottle in a tube sock for crunching on and have tied strips of t shirts together to make chew toys.

  20. Pawesome Cats says:

Easy to make budget toys, make playtime accessible for all dogs and all families. You can also make something similar for cats.
